چکیده

vision of the possible mechanism(s) involved in the hemolytic crisis brought on by other comorbid conditions, such as sepsis. Along the same lines, there is evidence that the HbF levels, an important regulatory mechanism of SCA severity and hemolysis, govern MP concentration by acting on specific MP subtypes. We can imagine that, in SCA children, a storm of various (mainly platelet-derived) procoagulant MPs takes place with chronic hemolysis and is driven by HbF levels (Figure 1).

CAR T-cell Therapy of Hematologic Malignancies: An Update in Targeted Antigens

Immunotherapy with genetically engineered T-cells that express the chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) has raised hopes for the treatment of pediatric malignancies. Although CAR T-cell development is on a fast-moving pace and evolution, the context of exploring novel targetable antigens has been neglected. In this review study, we analyze the prominent hematologic antigens targeted by engineered T-...

On-going clinical trials for elderly patients with a hematological malignancy: are we addressing the right end points?

BACKGROUND Cancer societies and research cooperative groups worldwide have urged for the development of cancer trials that will address those outcome measures that are most relevant to older patients. We set out to determine the characteristics and study objectives of current clinical trials in hematological patients. METHOD The United States National Institutes of Health clinical trial regis...

Utility of bronchoalveolar lavage in diagnosing respiratory tract infections in patients with hematological malignancies: are invasive diagnostics still needed?

BACKGROUND Patients treated for hematological malignancies have an increased risk of serious infections. Diagnosis and prompt initiation of therapy are essential. Bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) is a well-established investigation for identifying the cause of pulmonary infiltrates in immunocompromised patients. The aim of the study was to determine the diagnostic yield of BAL in patients treated f...

Current Status of Immune Checkpoint Inhibitors in Gastrointestinal Cancers

The expansion of our understanding of tumor immunity and the recent success of new cancer immunotherapy has reignited the hope that we can treat cancer effectively with immunotherapeutic approaches. Immune checkpoint inhibitors have shown significant efficacy in the treatment of some solid and hematologic malignancies. Encouraged by recent success in some other types of malignancies, many clini...

Genomic approaches to hematologic malignancies.

In the past several years, experiments using DNA microarrays have contributed to an increasingly refined molecular taxonomy of hematologic malignancies. In addition to the characterization of molecular profiles for known diagnostic classifications, studies have defined patterns of gene expression corresponding to specific molecular abnormalities, oncologic phenotypes, and clinical outcomes. Fur...
